Typography, in its narrative meaning, means the appearance of anything that is printed. It can be used to describe content. Typography is designed in such a way that it can be used to uncover or explain the content. By using typography in graphic design, a text passage can immediately express the emotions or mood that the writer wants to convey to their readers. It can also be termed as a label, or artistic identifier of a written text.

Text, or a piece of writing, remains constant. No matter how it is projected, its sense stays the same. For example, “my daughter does not like pizza” will remain the same if it is written or spoken. It will also remain the same if we print it or save it as a file on our computers. But, when this writing is printed, no matter on a computer screen, a paper, or a hoarding sign, typography will get involved.

To ask if typography is a form of art, is almost like asking if photography is a piece of art. Yes! There are some photographers and typographers that express such creativity in their work. Their work compels others to take it as a form of art. 

Some misconceptions:

People normally mistake typography with the change of fonts. Typography encompasses all the aspects that are involved in the appearance of a text. Fonts and changes of fonts are just one element that is involved in this process.

Typography and printing:

The mechanical procedures, by which the plans of the typographer are acknowledged, are helpful expressions. Although there is a thing known as “fine typography”. Typography is not a fine art itself. Books are known as the most basic examples of typography. Authors who want to express something through their scriptures write them. Publishers, with a purpose of gaining profits, choose them. A typographer does not involve his own creativity in his work. He only works, to give a useable connection, to someone who wants to say something, with someone they want to say it to. There are limits regarding what a typographer can do, and what they cannot do. There are 3 fundamental reasons why typography is ranked as a second art.

  1. Nothing original
  2. Limitations because of reading conventions
  3. Involvement of mechanical processes

These are the basic reasons why typography cannot be defined as a fine art. Let us have a look at them in detail.

Originality:

A typographer, unlike an artist, does not create anything. They merely portray or picturize what others write. The alphabets and other elements that he works with are not his own discovery. So, the absence of space for creation, distinguishes it from fine arts. 

Reading conventions:

The outlook of a scripture is dominated by how western readers observe the way of reading. From the top left of a page and going towards the right side. One line at one time until they read the bottom of the page. It has no concern with the aesthetics that the creator may have in their mind. For instance, many typographers are known to be attracted towards a certain font style, but the problem is, that font has been proven as “hard to read”

Mechanical processes:

Fine art does not involve mechanics. Typography on the other hand, involves many processes that are initiated with the help of technology. Thus, further strengthening the fact that it is something that cannot be resembled to fine art.

Why use typography:

After you have learned what is typography in graphic design, let’s learn why to use typography. Typography should direct and illuminate your clients, advance meaningfulness and availability, and guarantee a magnificent client experience. A nicely typo graphed website may increase the reader’s interest in a particular thing. People may begin to relate the typeface on a website with the image of the thing it is linked with.

Typography profoundly affects the manner in which clients process and see the data passed on via writing. Attractive ones are significantly more enticing than powerless textual styles that don’t strengthen the message of the content. It may be the reason why a reader would stay longer on your channel or leave within seconds.
